It’s Showtime for SoCCs!

At their annual gala on Oct 14, Asia Initiatives is unveiling it game-changing new concept of social capital credits (SoCCs). It is an innovative market driven exchange system that can work across the sectors Asia Initiatives is committed to, namely women’s empowerment, healthcare, education and neighborhood development.  Communities can earn SoCCs for accomplishing goals in healthcare, education, infrastructure and ecological stewardship. They can then trade their SoCCs through the local or virtual SoCC Market for telephone talk-time, public transport tickets, water and electricity bills, school fees, and other things they need to climb out of poverty. SoCCs therefore creates a natural flow of goods and services in poverty stricken communities. Unlike carbon credits however, where one pays for polluting, Social Capital Credits reward positive acts of communities. Another aspect of SoCCs is the SoCC-Starter, which provides loans to young people to start micro-enterprises, so communities can work on both individual and community-wide SoCC exchanges and development. SoCCs help make the tremendous work that poor women do for their communities visible, measurable and rewarded. We are very happy to be unveiling SoCCs today, and hope that you see the incredible potential that it has to change lives as we do.
